CYNTHIA ZAHARCHUK SCHMAUCH

I was born in Northampton.  My siblings called me "Pinky" from the time I was a baby No idea why.  Family and friends and teachers called me that name till I finished high school.  After that, my college friends called me Cynthia or Cindy.  I know if someone calls me "Pinky", they are very old, dear friends.  Once when I was in England, a voice called out "Hey Pinky...hey Northampton!"  We were in Kensington Garden.  I knew it had to be a fellow Konkrete Kid!  It was Penny Moyer.

As a child, I was fortunate to live in a small town.  We did not lock our doors, and our neighbors were kind and looked after us.  My mother and father were loving and caring.  We had a lovely municipal swimming pool and park...beautiful, happy summer days.

I went to Kindergarten at the
Wolf Building.  I walked to school each day with Sandra Koehler.  School was really fun and I loved going each day.  Unfortunately, my parents opted to send me to a Catholic School in first grade.  The nuns demanded perfect behavior.  And I do mean perfect.  There was no art, music or science.  I convinced my parents to allow me to return to public school in 8th grade.  I had to pedal pretty fast to keep up as I had never had any science and little math.  Senior High was great.  Initially, I planned to be a legal secretary, and I began in that tract.  Mr. Kindt, our science teacher, however, called my parents and told them I belonged in College Prep.  So I pivoted in my career plans and decided to become a librarian.  Kutztown U. had an excellent Library Science program.  I completed the 4 year program in 3 years, having been well prepared at Northampton High.  I was a school librarian for 35 years.

My husband, Bruce, and I have been married for 42 years.  Our daughter, Alison, graduated from
Dartmouth and Emory Law.  She is an attorney in Washington D.C., married with a baby daughter, Lydia.  We see them often and love them immeasurably.

Bruce and I share a love of travel.  We enjoy cruising and traveling, especially with friends.  I have always loved books and reading.  My Book Club is great fun as I read books that I would never ordinarily choose.  My other hobby is Allentown Garden Club.  Floral design is a great creative outlet...I have no native talent but am a pretty quick learner and have won many blue ribbons and Best of Shows.  Being elected President was an honor.  Most of all, I enjoy being at home with my husband and family.
